Home is where your book is.

I think this may be the root of truth for an author. Home is where your book is.

Sure, many authors have more than one publishing home for their works, and I highly encourage using multiple outlets for every author. I want to go in depth on this topic, and I will- in the near future and likely through a vlog. If you know me or my work at all, you know my debut novel was previously published with another publisher and is now in the process of becoming a second edition through Twisted Core Press. Let’s take a moment and celebrate this new cover.

LIVIANTCPEBOOKThat is what home looks like to me. Yes, the previous cover was very nice and the artist was top notch, but authors are these stubborn, obtuse, critical perfectionists. We have things in our mind a certain way and like minds with true communication are the only ways to fully capture the magic.

We hear so much about bad author/publishing deals.. We hear about scams. We hear about diva authors. But sometimes, it isn’t that dramatic. Sometimes, it is like a decent date. You meet someone. You are attracted to them. You checked them out, and they aren’t felons but you don’t realize until you go on a date, that no matter how perfect the match may seem, the spark and the long term goals just do not exist. Publishing is like dating. You have to get that right match and the right match for you, may not be the one you thought it would be. Sometimes, sadly, you do not know, no matter how  good it looks on paper.

As I said, I will go into this much deeper very soon and it will be a conversation you’ll want to check out. The main point of this, is Livian. She is home. If you have never read Livian, I do hope you keep an eye out and grab a copy. If you have read it previously, it will be different. It will be worth reading again. It will be my vision. The ending is darker, twisted, and sends you straight into a part of the world you didn’t see in the first edition.

So here is to the warrior fairies, the tattooed elves, the dwerger beneath the dirt, the hidden dragons, the demonic unicorns, and the dreamers. Livian is home.

A Comic Con, A Man’s Promise, & General Shenanigans

I’ve said it before, so don’t act shocked. I can be a fairly horrid blogger. I know this. I do. But you have to give it to me, when I do blog, very rarely is the dullness content high enough to register. Right? Right.

Literary-wise- So much has been going on. I highly suggest/push/nudge/urge/nicely demand you check out the blog for Twisted Core Press. If I am shady as me it is usually because I am being somewhat sociable for Twisted Core & 7DS Books. This post is a perfect example.

In other news, as shocking as it seems with all we have accomplished together, Twisted Core Press is almost a year old! What a year! I could go on, but I could also save that for another blog post and look rather blogger-snazzy. Yes. Let’s go with Option B.

Also, along with several new releases lately for our imprints, I have a new short story released in A Man’s Promise. We have some serious talent and a wide range of plots from love, vengeance, parenting, secrecy, and beyond. This is one hell of a collection. Pick it up and give it a read.

DEATH OF A MATADOR Author: Everett Powers Thriller Mystery                                                      In the dusty little Central California city of Stevinson, a matador enters a bullfight arena to face twelve hundred pounds of muscle and fury. He engages the bull and leads it through his cape with grace and flair, until his legs and arms go numb—he’s been drugged. When his paralyzed arms drop the cape, the bull rams a horn into his liver and that’s it for the matador. The killer didn’t mean for the man to die, but oh well. He wasn’t about to go to jail for it, though, so he tracks down the guy he paid to give the matador the spiked water, bashes him with a piece of rebar, and dumps him into a ditch. No witness, no jail. Imagine his surprise when his picture shows up in the paper later that week. Now he’s gotta kill someone else.

Instead of attending the bullfight, the mayor of Stevinson, Manny Dutra, is negotiating with pot growers who want to grow their quasi-legal product in his city. He squeezes three hundred grand out of them, a nice “commission,” but he’s gotta get the ultra conservative and religious city council to approve the deal. He’ll get it done because he knows who’s been doing what behind closed doors. When one of the council figures out what he’s up to, Manny kills her to save the deal. As the week progresses, the cops are all over him and his constituents, hardworking religious Portuguese farmers and dairymen, are on his case because they can’t believe he wants to let someone grow drugs in their town. If he can just hold things together for six days he can collect his graft and split.Too bad for Manny and the matador’s killer, Detective Grant Starr is asked to help the Sheriff’s Department solve the murders. Can Grant, his beautiful girlfriend Detective Amber Whitehall, friend Detective Ralph Bensen, and Detective John McKay of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department bring the killers to justice?
In his follow-up to the thrilling THE MIGHTY T, Powers takes his readers for a wild ride inside a close-knit Central California Portuguese community, with their religious festivals and bloodless bullfights. A world rich in tradition.

It soon becomes clear that what one angel will risk to earn the title of Herald, is matched only by what another will do to keep it.

Blog Worthy LIVIAN News

Now in paperback print!

Now in paperback print!

I hold my head in ultimate shame. I have been the worst writerly blogger, possibly in the universe. Well, minus those “wordsmith” sorts that blog “abt thr new buk an how it got 2 b a Ny bst sllr when a gud pulblishering hizzouse sees da potental” Ha. Sorry for cracking on all you bloggers out there that roll that way, but publishers do check you out and your blogs. How do I know this?

Well, simply because I got popped by my publisher for my lack of internet workings and blogging. We all know I exist via facebook, twitter and even linkedin but this has to be done as well. I suppose I assume I post something on facebook and it gets various shares equals to what I need to do for online marketing. My hands are still stinging from the pop (haha) but here we go- I am officially back to blogging and will even do this blog tour thing. (I swear, if I am going to tour, I am going to need sweet tea and brown m&ms at every stop- and of course, groupies. You guys can make that happen, right?)

You know what, I may even pop on one of my wigs an some eyeliner just so I look up to par and send a vlog out soon. That would be a wonderful way to catch you up to speed with everything going on in my own little literary world.

Bless Burst Books and my publisher, she wanted me to blog and I have to say, she gave me something WONDERFUL to blog about to you all. Many of you have asked one question over and over. When will LIVIAN be a “hold in your hand actual paperback?” Guess what? Get those debit cards out so all of my whining and claims of people stating they were waiting for an old fashioned book to be released doesn’t look like a diva author move. Seriously now, buy it. Don’t make a liar out of me. I will also now be reconnecting with the schools that were interested in a speaking session and pre-ordered book signings- as well as any new ones with interest (hint hint.)

The paperback book is officially released on the publisher’s website (I do make more money via those purchases) and will be released in print soon on other book worthy vendor sites.  PURCHASE LIVIAN PAPERBACK EDITION HERE!

Joseph Rubas. Bringing the Fear.

Joseph Rubas has written over 140 short stories in the horror/sci-fi/fantasy genres. His first book, a collection of short stories titled “Pocketful of Fear” will be released October 2012. It is a pleasure to have him on the blog.

1-Your short story collection “Pocketful of Fear” will be released in 2012. How do you compile your short stories? Is there a common element or simply your current favorites?
In this one case, at least, there’s no method to the madness. In Pocket, you’re gonna find mobsters, zombies, vampires, and ghosts, both literal and metaphoric, side-by-side. Each of the stories was written long before I ever considered collecting them. They just…popped into my head, and I caught them on the page. The earliest was written when I was 17, and the latest this past winter, February or March.

2- One deceased author of any time period is standing right in front of you, allowing you to pick their mind. Your choice. Who is it?

Hm. There are so many good dead authors. Hell, the best tend to be dead! I’d have to go with…Lovecraft. His tales fascinate me, the cosmic horror, the swarthy Spaniards, the crumbling New England villages. I think I’d like to spend the day with him. He was a teetoller, so we’d most likely crack open a few Cokes and hang out in an ancient cemetery.

3- Tell us a bit about your favorite character that you have brought to life in your writing.

There are a few that stand above the rabble. My favorite, hands down, would have to be Tony DeSimone, the psychopathic mobster from The Spider Hole, which appears in Pocket. He’s also a supporting character in a lot of other stories. I created him from two sources: Joe Pesci’s character in Goodfellas and Paulie Walnuts from The Sopranos. I never watched the latter, though in some television ad I saw Walnuts, and he seemed, to me at least, the archetypical mobster. And Goodfellas…well, it’s no secret that it’s my favorite movie. When it came time to create Tony, I called up the dim memory of Paulie Walnuts and gave him Joe Pesci’s personality (and last name from Goodfellas), and it was a match made in hell.

4- You are getting ready to write. What must you have in order to have a span of successful writing?

There’s no constant with me. I write anywhere under just about any condition. In fact, the earliest tale in Pocket (The Jacket) was written at ten at night in the passenger seat of a Ford Econoline van in a cheap notebook. One thing I like to have while writing is music. It drowns out the world.

5- How do you read? E-book, audio, print?

Print. I’m a dinosaur. I love getting my hands on an actual book. There’s just something about it. I can’t imagine anything more relaxing that kicking back with a print book. I’m not opposed to E-books or audio, I just like my words on paper.

6- Do you have any WIP or future projects that you would like to tell us about?

I’m thinking of doing a second Pocket. I have a strong batch of stories, some of which I like very much, that would make a good follow up.

*Scary Seven* Give us 7 books, stories, poems, or song lyrics that you consider to have the best scare factor. (state if each are lyrics, poem, story, or book)
1-Pet Cemetery by Stephen King (book)
2-Ghost Story by Peter Straub (book)
3-Herbert West: Re-Animator by H.P. Lovecraft (short story)
4-The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe (short story)
5-I Love the Dead by Alice Cooper (song)
6-The Squaw by Bram Stoker (short story)
7- Dark Rivers of the Heart by Dean Koontz (book)

Author Shout Out- Stephen Penner’s Professor Barrister’s Dinosaur Mysteries

Recently, I’ve had the pleasure to beta read for a fellow writer. I have wanted to beta read for some time, though- three kids, my own writing, and a move can put a road block on the “want” list. To sum it up, I realize that it is well worth fitting into the daily grind to have the chance to not only help a fellow author- but enlightening to experience the sheer enjoyment of getting your hands on a great read (that is not yet available for anyone to snag a copy of!)

This is not the first book in the series that I have read, and while I have several more books to catch up on the series- this is one that I must pass on to fellow readers.

Stephen Penner is the man behind my “must read” recommendation for young readers with the “Professor Barrister’s Dinosaur Mysteries”. The level for this series may be ranked for K-3rd grade, but as an adult, I must admit that I am hooked!

Penner’s ability to teach while entertaining is a sure proof way to keep you wanting more of the series. The illustrations of the books are wonderfully detailed without becoming overwhelming as only the greats (such as Shel Silverstein) accomplished with book art.

Normally, I would suggest a book/series with a genre or age group. In this case, young children, older children, parents, grandparents, teachers; all of those with a pulse- you will learn and enjoy doing so if you allow yourself to turn the pages of one of the Professor Barrister’s Dinosaur Mysteries.
